May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and here at Leo Baeck, we are committed to promoting mental health awareness and creating a supportive environment for all students and staff. As school social workers, one of our main objectives is to reduce stigma surrounding mental health and encourage open conversations about well-being. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and we want to ensure that everyone feels comfortable seeking support when needed.
Throughout Mental Health Awareness Month (and beyond), we have organized a series of events and activities that focus on mental wellness, coping strategies, and creating a safe space for emotional expression. These initiatives aim to foster a sense of belonging, reduce the barriers to mental health conversations, and equip both students and staff with the tools to prioritize their mental well-being.
What’s Happening During Mental Health Awareness Month?
We have a wide variety of activities planned to engage different grade levels:
- Art Therapy
Creativity can be a powerful tool for emotional expression. These sessions will allow young students to express their feelings through various art forms, helping them develop coping skills and emotional awareness in a fun, interactive way. - Puppy Therapy
Sometimes, all we need to feel better is some unconditional love from our furry friends! Students will be able to interact with therapy dogs, which have been shown to reduce stress and improve mood. - Workshops with Jewish Addiction Community Services (JACS)
Mental health challenges can sometimes be connected to substance use. To support our students in navigating these topics, we will be hosting workshops with Jewish Addiction Community Services (JACS) for our Grade 7 and 8 students. These sessions will focus on mental health, addiction, and making informed, healthy choices while encouraging students to seek support when needed. Grade 6 students will participate in a separate, in-class presentation during their health class. This session will take a broader approach to mental health, focusing on coping strategies and overall well-being. - Mental Health Shabbat
In collaboration with our school community, we will host a special Mental Health Shabbat. This event will highlight the importance of mindfulness, community, and well-being. It will offer a peaceful opportunity for reflection and connection, allowing students and staff to come together and support one another. - Nature Walks
Sometimes, the best way to clear our minds is to step outside and embrace the calming presence of nature. We’ll be organizing nature walks for students and staff to enjoy the outdoors and practice mindfulness. - Yoga and Mindfulness
To promote physical and mental relaxation, we will offer yoga sessions and mindfulness practices that will help students and staff focus on their breathing, find balance, and manage stress in a healthy, productive way.
Why It Matters
The importance of mental health awareness cannot be overstated. Mental health is an essential part of our overall well-being, and when we prioritize it, we create a healthier, more resilient school community. The events planned for Mental Health Awareness Month will not only raise awareness but also provide students and staff with practical tools to manage their mental health.
Looking Ahead
While Mental Health Awareness Month is a time to focus on mental health, we are committed to making these conversations and resources a priority all year round. By continuing to raise awareness and provide ongoing support, we hope to nurture a school culture that values mental health and encourages everyone to seek help when needed.
