Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why does tuition not cover everything, including the extras?

The Leo Baeck Day School is a not for profit organization which sets tuition at the lowest possible level to meet our core needs. This ensures that we are competitive in the market place, accessible to the widest range of families and still provide a high quality education. It also means that we need to raise extra funds for enhancements and additions to our programs and for capital improvements.

2. What if I can only donate a small amount?

We understand and recognize people's personal circumstances and welcome and appreciate all donations. Every bit counts and the more people supporting our school, the better.

3. How can I donate?

You can donate now online, securely, through our website for each of our "initiatives". You may also contact Linda Abramsohn, Assistant to the Director of Development, at labramsohn@leobaeck.ca or (905) 709-3636 x 222.

4. Where will the money go?

The money will be used either to:

  • enhance existing programs
  • create new and necessary programs
  • support capital projects
  • enhance future programming

A detailed explanation of funding opportunities is available on this site in the Support Leo Baeck section or contact Elysa Greisman, Director of Development at egreisman@leobaeck.ca or (905) 709-3636 x 241.

5. What if I already support the Parents’ Association?

The Leo Baeck Parents' Association (LBPA) is a volunteer led committee of the Board of Directors that offers services, programs and support to our school community. The LBPA designate funds raised throughout the school year to a particular school project, Technology for example. This support, although very generous and needed, does not fulfill all of the school's needs. For those families that are able, further support through donations, attending events and sending tribute cards is important.

6. Who will decide where the money will go?

The School's future goals are outlined in our 5 year Strategic Plan published in April 2005. Fundraising initiatives will be used to fulfill the goals outlined in the plan. The Board of Directors and The Senior Administration decide where to allocate incoming funds based on the school's needs.

7. Who is accountable for the funds?

The Board of Directors and the Senior Administration are accountable for the funds. Leo Baeck’s audited accounts are published in an annual financial statement which is available from the Office.

8. UJA already contributes to Leo Baeck, why should I give?

UJA's contribution to Leo Baeck is purely a limited subsidy for those families who qualify for financial assistance. All other fundraising needs are met by individual donations.

9. How does the new Federal law about NO TAX on STOCK DONATIONS benefit the donor?

(excerpt from UJA Today)

With the federal government’s announcement to eliminate capital gains tax on securities donated to charities or public foundations, great benefits are in store for donors.

If you have stock that you have owned for more than one year, and it has appreciated since you purchased it, you can save on the capital gains tax you would owe if you sold it yourself by donating the stock. And since Leo Baeck is a charitable organization, you will be entitled to an income tax deduction for the full current market value of your gift, to the extent allowed by law.

Here is an example: Ms. Cohen purchased 100 shares of ABC stock three years ago at $25 per share or $2,500. This stock is now worth $50 per share, or $5,000. If Ms. Cohen sold the stock, she would pay capital gains taxes on the $2,500 of appreciation. If Ms. Cohen donates the stock, she is entitled to a charitable deduction of $5,000 from her taxes and pays no capital gains tax.

“In 1997 my eldest daughter entered Senior Kindergarten at The Leo Baeck Day School South Campus. It has always been my passion to volunteer in the academic institution that my children are in and I immediately offered my services to the administration as a parent volunteer within the classroom. Now more than a dozen years later, I continue to assist on a weekly basis. Volunteering has provided me with the opportunity to see and learn first hand how amazing the teaching is at Leo Baeck, and to observe the passion and commitment the teachers have in the students' education. I have found it enormously rewarding as I feel I have been able to assist teachers and help make a difference in the students' learning. By June, 2011, my 3 daughters will all have graduated from the school, and I can honestly say that my experience as a volunteer has made me a witness to the incredible education they have received. I feel very fortunate to have been able to provide my children with the Leo Baeck experience.”
