Grades 1 to 5:

For Grades 1 to 5, we offer a rigorous and balanced curriculum consisting of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Technology, Social and Environmental Studies, Hebrew studies, Physical Education, French, Music and Creative Art. Our courses are based on Ontario Ministry curriculum guidelines. We have articulated learning expectations for each grade and subject. These are distributed to all parents at Curriculum Night early in the fall and are on file in the school office.

Ongoing assessments allow us to evaluate our teaching and to monitor the academic achievement of our students. Teacher based evaluation is supplemented by the Canadian Test of Basic Skills, a standardized test administered to all students in Grades 4 to 8 every second year. Formal written report cards are issued to parents three times a year with teachers providing anecdotal summaries of individual student achievement. Regular parent-teacher conferences are scheduled to allow for personal insights to be shared.

The school day is divided into three parts consisting of: English Language Arts; Mathematics/Science/Social Studies and Hebrew Language with qualified teachers teaching in each subject area. Students' learning is supported by specialists in enrichment and remediation to enable us to achieve our goal of meeting children's individual needs. Classes are heterogeneous in order for children to be able to learn from and with each other and to support each other's strengths. The first 15 minutes of the day is devoted to "home room time" with the teacher in that third of the day being the advocate or "in loco parentis" of the children in that class.

Our program is developmentally appropriate and delivered in the warmth of a caring and supportive atmosphere.
