Open your Home and Heart to an Israeli Young Emissary!
We are looking for host families who are willing to open their homes to host our Israeli Young Emissaries. Leo Baeck is proud to be taking part in this program, which brings Israeli high school students to Canada for a year to be informal educators who will serve as living bridge between our students and Israel.
The emissaries are boarded with Canadian families, who introduce them to Canadian life and culture and are introduced to Israeli culture in return. It has been a richly rewarding experience for past host families, and we are hoping that Leo Baeck families will open their homes and hearts to these students.
Next year, the school and Temple Kol Ami will be jointly hosting two talented 18-year-olds, one boy and one girl. The emissaries will be working with both institutions.
Hosting will be divided into three periods:
First host family: 24/8/10-6/12/10
Second host family: 4/1/11-4/4/11
Third host family: 4/4/11-20/6/11
If you would like to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to get to know Israel from a different perspective, and need more information, please contact Miriam Glaser, Hebrew Coordinator, at mglaser@leobaeck.ca.

Support Brick By Brick: Buy a T-shirt!
Tthe Social Justice Committee is the first of its kind at Leo
Baeck. Our Brick by Brick campaign is hoping to raise $8,500 by
the end of the school year, enough to build a school in Kenya. We
are working with Free the Children to give underprivileged
children the opportunity to learn in a safe environment,
something we are so fortunate to have here in Canada. The
proceeds from the T-shirt sales will go to our Brick by Brick
campaign. We thank you for all of your support! Click here to download the T-shirt order form, or go to the link at the top of the page.
Tzedakah Trip to Ecuador for Middle Schoolers and Recent Alumni: Interested?
South Campus Principal Jonathan Harris has recently begun to explore the possibility of taking a group of current and former Leo Baeck students to Ecuador in the spring of 2011.
The trip would take place during the second week of the Passover break and would be open to students in Grades 7 through 10.
The trip's focus would be the construction of a school in an Andean village, and would also include Free the Children leadership training and some sightseeing experiences. It would build on the students' commitment to Tikkun Olam as well as enhance their global awareness, which is espoused in the IB curriculum.
The trip would be approximately 8 or 9 days, and the cost would likely be in the $3000 range.
Mr. Harris's previous experience on a similar trip was among the highlights of his teaching career, and the students with whom he shared the experience have described it as a life-changing one. Please let Mr. Harris know if you would be interested in exploring this possibility for your son or daughter by emailing him at jharris@leobaeck.ca.
If there is sufficient interest, Mr. Harris will plan an information session before the end of the school year, so keep an eye out!
