Be Green: Support Jewish CSAs!

Information Session: Thursday, April 29th, 2010

The Cutting Veg Organic Farm is thrilled to offer two Jewish CSAs – the Tikkun Adamah CSA at the Kavanah Garden (Bathurst St. and Rutherford Rd.), and the Pri Adamah CSA at Temple Sinai (Bathurst St. and Wilson Rd.)! A Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program is a mutually beneficial partnership in which individuals or families receive fresh, local, organically grown produce weekly, while supporting local farmers and sustainable growing practices.

So, why is joining a CSA a “Jewish” thing to do? When God finished creating the world, God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden and commanded Adam, “l’ovdah u’l’shomra,” to serve and protect Creation. When we purchase local organic produce, we are supporting a food system that cares for our natural world, our health, and our community – we are honouring our role as stewards of God’s creation. As well, by participating in a CSA that values social, environmental, personal, and economic health as “the bottom line,” we actively participate in Tikkun Olam, repairing the world. Be a part of the over 60 Jewish communities across North America that have committed to putting Jewish purchasing power behind local farmers!

CSAs run from June-October. For more information about the Tikkun Adamah CSA and the Pri Adamah CSA, join us at an information session on Thursday, April 29th at 3:30pm in the Forum. Farmer Daniel Hoffmann and Kavanah Garden Director Risa Alyson Strauss will be available to answer questions, provide additional information, and hand out registration packages. For more information or to register, please contact Daniel Hoffmann (647)388-7444 or daniel@thecuttingveg.com. Space is limited, join today!.

Open your Home and Heart to an Israeli Young Emissary!

We are looking for host families who are willing to open their homes to host our Israeli Young Emissaries. Leo Baeck is proud to be taking part in this program, which brings Israeli high school students to Canada for a year to be informal educators who will serve as living bridge between our students and Israel.

The emissaries are boarded with Canadian families, who introduce them to Canadian life and culture and are introduced to Israeli culture in return. It has been a richly rewarding experience for past host families, and we are hoping that Leo Baeck families will open their homes and hearts to these students.

Next year, the school and Temple Kol Ami will be jointly hosting two talented 18-year-olds, one boy and one girl. The emissaries will be working with both institutions.

Hosting will be divided into three periods:
First host family: 24/8/10-6/12/10
Second host family: 4/1/11-4/4/11
Third host family: 4/4/11-20/6/11
If you would like to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to get to know Israel from a different perspective, and need more information, please contact Irith Rosen at irosen@leobaeck.ca.

Save the Date! The LBPA North Campus is holding its first annual Mitzvah Day.

Our 2 Mitzvah Day Projects will be:

We need donations of gently used backpacks (washed, please) from parents. There will be a box in the school for the backpacks starting on April 26th.

Parents, please let us know if your children will be staying after school: contact Cindy Yack at lingling@rogers.com by May 10, 2010 to let her know so she can know how many kids are staying after school in Room 110-111. If you have any questions, please contact Cindy Yack at lingling@rogers.com.

Camp George

Get a Taste of Camp George!

October 15th-16th, 2010

Is your child hoping to go to camp but doesn't quite know what to expect? Or do you think they'd just enjoy a fun fall weekend up north with their friends? Try the "Taste of Camp George" weekend, coming up on October 15th-16th, 2010!

The program is open to students who will be in Grades 3, 4 and 5 next year. Students will be leaving for camp on a staff-led bus after school on Friday, October 15th and departing camp the following day, October 16th, at 6 pm, returning to school around 8:30.

The program will be led by a Camp George faculty member and will highlight the best of camp, including Kabbalat Shabbat. Camp George senior staff will be on hand to lead activity rotations: last year these included such activities as arts, sports, teva, and ropes. The camp staff will also be sleeping in cabins and leading the children throughout the weekend. Bus routes and departure times will all be finalized when we have exact numbers.

Participation is limited, and the early-bird price of $50 is only available until May 16th, so sign up soon. Download the permission form here or at the top of the page. And have fun!
